On our first visit to the Siro Pacenti Azienda in Montalcino, we were more than impressed with stunning vistas of the Pelagrilli cru vineyard and state-of-the-art cantina. We arrived already in love with the Brunello wines that Giancarlo Pacenti, who started bottling his first Brunello & Rosso wines in the 1980s, is known for, but we gained an understanding of what it takes to create these special wines! An absolute perfectionist & master of innovation in agriculture and cellar technology, Giancarlo introduced a more accessible Brunello character to his Sangiovese, while respecting the traditions of the region, by using smaller French barriques for aging. Siro Pacenti Brunello is blended from two crus, a northern plot and a southern plot, about 25 km away from each other, each with a different microclimate. Only bottling about 60,000 high quality bottles of wine and Giancarlo’s reputation as being a leader among the younger generation of producers in Montalcino, has given Pacenti’s highly allocated wines an almost cult-like status (James Suckling rated 100pts to multiple vintages of the Vecchie Vigne (from 35–50-year-old vines) blend of both Crus.
