Alessandro Boido, Mr. Moscato to many, of Ca’ d’Gal in the Moscato d’Asti hills is known for his aged Moscato “Vite Vecchie” and is the 4th generation of his family to make wine on this property. Boido alongside his charming wife Carla run the winemaking and agriturismo on the estate that has been in the family since the late 1800s. Boido however has revived and resurrected the ancient technique of aging his Moscato d’Asti “Vite Vecchie”. After bottling, the Moscato is placed in sand filled wooden crates for 48 months, recreating the process that was traditionally done in caves of sandy cellars. The result is a Tre Bicchieri-winning Moscato d’Asti that can be found in Michellin starred restaurants around the world. The high-quality organic farming practices, green harvesting and Boido’s preservation of old vines results in a lower yield, yet the product is superior to any Moscato we’ve ever tried. His two single-vineyard Cru Moscatos from 60–70-year-old vineyards are fresh and award-winning in their own right, pairable with savory dishes as well as being an excellent traditional dolci accompaniment. The moderate sweetness and fresh finish in Ca’ d’Gal’s estate bottled Asti Spumanti is dynamite and not your old school Asti Spumanti! Our lovely visit and typical Piemontese lunch with Carla & Alessandro in their tasting room with vineyard view was enjoyed by all; our daughter even got to help Carla and her mother bottle and box Moscato (yet another true family affair), which was a highlight of her trip!
